About Bone Marrow Transplant and Malignant Hematology

Currently, there are only 168 bone marrow transplant centers in the country. Karmanos Cancer Center is one of the largest regional centers. The bone marrow transplant program reports better-than-expected 1-year survival rates, placing them among the top 3% of cancer centers nationwide.

Patients undergoing a bone marrow transplant can have an autologous or allogenic transplant. An autologous transplant is when a patient receives their own stem cells. An allogenic transplant is when a patient receives someone else’s stem cells. For many patients, this is a curative treatment.

Patients undergoing bone marrow transplant face significant challenges during the course of their treatment. While being transplanted, patients are hospitalized for weeks to a month at a time. With this prolonged treatment course, patients and their families face many obstacles.

Malignant hematology is the team caring for patients with leukemias and lymphomas. Often times, these patients are very sick and require treatment immediately.

Money Raised

The money raised from the outing will go to the Karmanos Cancer Institute Bone Marrow Transplant and Malignant Hematology Department. This money will be use to directly benefit the patients receiving care. The money will also be used to help fund clinical trials and research to help advance treatments for these diseases.
